Graham C. Hornel
Graham Hornels international travel and
tourism industry experience covers nearly 25 years and includes
senior management positions with three of the worlds leading
tourism bodies. A former British Army Infantry Officer with 6th
Gurkha Rifles, Hornel first moved to Perth, Western Australia in
November, 1970 following military service in Asia and Europe.During
a seven year initial stay he developed a successful career in marketing
and corporate communications positions and in the print and broadcast
media.
In May, 1977 Graham Hornel moved to Hong Kong
to join the Hong Kong Tourist Association the position from
which he relocated to San Francisco, USA to join the Pacific Asia
Travel Association (PATA) as Director of Communication. During his
14 years as a PATA Staff Director, Hornel was involved in a number
of that Associations Tourism Task Forces and he gained an
excellent working knowledge of most Pacific Asia Region destinations
and of the international media. He was also Specialist Consultant
to the Governments of Canada and Western Australia.
In June, 1994 Graham Hornel returned to his Western
Australian home to take up a new tourism consultancy position. In
December that year, he was directly involved in launching the Indian
Ocean Tourism Organisation (IOTO) the regional tourism body
of which he was Foundation CEO and Secretary General until December
31, 2000 when the IOTO Secretariat relocated to Seychelles. During
his six years with IOTO, Graham Hornel managed a number of key IOTO
projects in and around the Indian Ocean Region and was Project Leader
for a Mozambique Tourism Capacity Building Project operated by Ausaid
for the Australian Government.
